Guntur: Incessant rains wreaked havoc in Guntur district. Public transportation Wash-it as the roads were inundated.

Major rivers and brooks received heavy inflow on Tuesday. Palnadu, the upland area in Guntur district, received the highest rainfall. Naguleru, which is in spate at Dachepally, cut off transportation on Narketpally Addamki highway.

The road link between Sattenapally and Narasaraopet was also damaged by the Madala Vaagu which began overflowing. Transportation between Piduguralla and Sattenapally was also affected by Yeddu Vaagu.

Many low-lying areas were submerged due to rainwater at various places in the district. Acchamp eta, Krosuru, Bellamkonda, Amarawati, Pedakurapadu, Tulluru, Gurajala, Machavaram, Vinukonda, Macharla mandals received heavy rainfall.

In Krosuru, around 300 houses were inundated in Chenchu Colony. The government school in the village was completely inundated with Water flowing at 4-feet in it. A bus, with 60 passengers, got strandedin flood waters near Acchampeta. However, the locals responded immediately and alerted the officials averting a major incident. A pregnant Woman, who was in labour, also got stuck up on the other side of the stream but locals helped her reach the hospital.

Local MLA K. Siridihar directed the district administration to take immediate relief measures and set up a relief camp with basic amenities. In Peda Nemalipuri village of Rajupalem mandal, people came on to the roads in protest against the officials for failing to ensure quality in drai-nage works, as a result of which rainwater got clogged in the village and inundated their houses.

Meanwhile, the Pulichintala project received heavy inflow. District collector Kantilal Dande cautioned nearby villages to stay alert and deployed officials to initiate evacuation of people, if necessary. Kolluru, Bodhanam, Chityala, Pulichinta which can submerge due to Pulichintala project have been put on high alert.

Despite all this, rain comes as a breather for the farmers. In Palanadu region, crops began withering due to the continuous dry spell but the rains inundated some fields where cotton and chilli are being grown.

Guntur district received an average rainfall of 14.3 mm in the last 24 hours.
