Age-old trees felled for Nehru’s public meeting
VIJAYAWADA SEPT 7; Age-old trees are being axed at Christurajapuram in Vijayawada city as part of the preparations for Devineni Rajasekhar’s (Nehru) public meeting, who recently switched loyalties to the Telugu Desam from the Congress, Though the trees are mot being rooted out completely some of the trees were trimmed down to a single branch. The decision to cut down the trees for a political meeting is now drawing the ire of environmentalists.
The meeting is supposed to take place near the community Centre On Christurajapuram main road. Many leaders from the TD, along with the Chief Minister are expected to attend the programme.It is learnt that to get a wider view of the venue the trees are being chopped off.
The locals are also saying that the municipality officials are cutting the trees for Mr Nehru’s meeting. They also found fault with the VMC that, they are facing many problems with the lack of drainage and bad roads, “The Officials never bothered about our problems, but now they are cutting the age old trees for a political meeting,” said Raghavaiah, a tea-shop vendor.
When contacted, additional director of horticulture in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, Mr Pradeep Kumar told Deccan Chronicle that in view of the Chief Minister’s security they are cutting the branches which are blocking the view. “We have received instructions from the CM’s security wing to remove the branches and We are acting upon it,” he said.
When contacted, local Telugu Desam legislator Gadde Rammohan said that he is not aware of either tree cutting or the meeting. He said he will speak to the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation officials about the incident.
Mr Nehru already announced his decision to join Telugu Desam after meeting Chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
