Prometheus in Empire Magazine – “The Big Questions”
The August 2012 issue of Empire has a two-page Prometheus feature that attempts to answer some of the questions regarding the theories presented in the movie. As you can imagine, however, nothing is truly answered. Furthermore, there is an entry in the Empire feature that is incorrect – we do know why Guy Pearce was cast despite not having any scenes of him as a young person in the movie.
A cool thing, though, is that you’ll notice a shout out to PrometheusForum member Cavalorn! Thanks to seeasea for the files.

kinda sad we need an article to try to explain the movie
Kinda sad YOU need it
this is science fiction.
idiots who can’t handle thinking beware
thanks
Great read for those who missed things the 1st or 2nd time round….great to see it all layed out and easy to follow , cool beans
that was all obvious, except for space jesus, vickers is a android he is lying!
she calls weyland father, blatant bladerunner reference
vickers is human
Great read??? Are you fucking serious?
The questions prove that the movie is nothing more but a narrative disaster. The only questions, that are ok to be left open are the bigger ones. 90 percent of these questions are based on lazy illogical screen writing. Plain and simple. No extra scenes will make this a better movie.
HOw about an interviewer that has some balls and asks Ridley the real questions? like what cliche characters? Why was the geologist there only for the money if hes a scientist? Why was charlie such a dick? Why do people go on a mission like this not KNOWING whats its about and not knowing their colleagues?
bla
You
are a massive idiot.
Q: Why was the script so clunky?
Q: Why was Shaw able to run around, leap, abseil and fight with only medical staples holding her abdomen together?
Q: Why were the Prometheus pilots so jovial about their suicide mission?
Q: What does Shaw think she’s going to achieve by going to an alien planet populated by beings that have a history of trying to kill her?
Q:Is she fundamentally stupid?
Q:With so many things going for it, how did Sir Ridley manage to make such a stinker?
@ hiab-x :
A: It’s a movie.
Sure, it’s a film… a movie… but it’s a millions-of-dollars-production that hitched on to a very important film (Alien). It’s a HUGE industry that makes its money from us, the excited viewer. We can’t just dismiss every misstep of the film and excuse it because it’s “just a movie.”
I saw Prometheus twice on its opening day. The first time through, I became physically uncomfortable and irritated over the characters, bad plot moves and general silliness of the whole thing. I laughed out loud. I knew I was watching a movie, but I paid good money to see it–and invested my personal time in it.
I saw it a second time just to prove to myself that I wasn’t dreaming: the movie was terrible.
And another thing, when you buy a new record or book by an artist that you love and appreciate because of their past accomplishments, and you’re disappointed by their new offering, have you ever excused it as being “just a book” or “just music”?
You can’t write off disappointment. It’s an emotion.
Question: Is Prometheus worthy being part of the Alien Universe/Franchise?
Answer: No
Only Alien and Prometheus are worthy films by the master.
The rest are crappy fan fics.
your an idiot
This film is so stupid, it just shows you that the scriptwriters and Ridley Scott didn’t even know how to tell this story. They considered Jesus Christ as a Space Jockey. LMFAO…..idiotic.
I will forgive some newbie director who’s under pressure from the studio. Like I can Fincher for Alien 3. It wasn’t that bad but obviously it was difficult for him.
However, for someone like Scott to make a movie like this and not SEE the narrative errors, makes me really lose hope in movies.
And just because it’s *only* a movie, doesn’t mean its issues should be forgiven. That statement only works for people who, are casual movie goers and are ok with mediocre content.
From a director of ALien and BR, I expected more. But not the impossible. Just a well written scifi movie. Instead we get a movie that sports Michael Bay like characters and a story telling that really equals that of George Lucas.
I saw someone on twitter saying “Prometheus is about how exactly NOT to go embark on a scientific mission.”
Nothing the characters did or said made sense. Nothing. And for someone like Scott to not see these issues, blows my mind.
To add to that, Scott will have a lot of making up to do for this piece of shit.
Who care’s about the beautiful visuals if the actual story telling is just pathetic? Its hard to believe that someone like Damon Lindelof gets paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to add this absolute worthless writing. He fooled audiences for years with Lost. In the end, I was glad I never watched it.
This movie would have been better off left as a direct Alien prequel. All that jesus crap is just so laughable.
Yeah im bitter about the movie. Waited years for it. Now you better pray that he doesnt screw up the Blade Runner prequel.
Buzzfunk, I am glad that I am not the only one in this forum that is utterly disgusted and disappointed about how this film turned out. Ridley Scott made a huge mistake not making a direct prequel to his original. This film should have been a masterpiece.
Has there ever been an explanation as to why no one seemed to give a damn about the squid-type-thing left in the med-pod AND the kicking that Shaw dished out to the two about to stick her in cryo? It was like a scene, 2 mins even, would have cleared it up. Did no one ask any questions? Was the woman with the WORST Scottish accent/acting not a LITTLE pissed off at getting the shit kicked out of her? Was no one paying ANY ATTENTION to where Shaw ran off to on her way to the med-pod?
And why the hell does the concept art for Fifields transformed/transforming/mutated state (and for that matter, almost everything else) look 500% better than what we saw on screen???
The twisted distortions of Gigers biomechanical artworks would have been ripe for creating cinematic nightmares. Varied (and sick) enough to look similar to his first Alien creations, their lineage is entirely their own. His aesthetic influence is all over huge swathes of the film, yet the elements that matter most in creating the visceral, black hearted horror are ignored. What drew O’Bannon, Scott etc. to his work originally was its grim human tangibility. His images that are partly human and part “I DON’T UNDERSTAND!! OH MY GOD WHAT AM I LOOKING AT??” A distorted reading of broken, familiar flesh; the cold, dark tangled images of quasi-sexual nightmares and worlds utterly removed from our own physical and mental experience. But what do we get? Starfish, squid, shark and dolphins.
We get
“Free Willy – In SPACE”
Screebson, not sure if you realise this but the woman with the WORST Scottish accent (Kate Dickie) is actually Scottish!!. But I agree it was cringeworthy. As for her acting she is a good actress but never seemed to get the chance in Prometheus as she always seemed to be in the background. And had a terrible haircut!
I think I was pissed off that she seemed to be doing that toned-down Hollywood ‘Scottish Acting’ of “every line is a question delivered with a non-region specific flatness”. It drives me up the bloody wall. For example, MyAnna Burings accent was so bad in Doomsday it was beyond distracting. Just as well the film was mad as fuck, and Craig Conways accent made up for her High Road acting…It was only on watching the extras on DVD that I found out he was English! I genuinely thought he was a Glaswegian / West of Scotland actor. (I’d like to point out that I’m a foul-mouthed Glaswegian)
I’d like to state that some of the worst Scottish accents are put on by Scottish actors in big Hollywood movies. And they are also responsible for some of THE. WORST. American accents. Ewan McGregor, anyone?
How can she go from Red Road to this??? And yes, her hair cut was bad. It must be some kind of special Space Haircut that most of them had. You know, to keep out the space germs for when they took their helmets off. It probably helped them not to ask David what the fuck any of the hieroglyphics said and forget that theyz wuz on a spase mish-shun as propur sigentistss. Or something.
You can blame stupid Ridley Scott. I read somewhere that he said he didn’t want it to look to “Gigery”. Gigers involvement in the film was pretty minimal as he only worked on some of the murals. Carlos Huante and Neville Page did the creature designs which were not even scary or monstrous to say the least.
Screenbson
Yeah the medlab scene was a great idea but again, the illogical behavior by everyone just took away from it. At that point I pointed to the screen like “am I the only one watching this shit???”
After wards, shes bloody and almost naked, no one seems to care or to ask whats going on. Instead suddenly its revealed that Weyland was on the ship all along. I mean, its just so so bad that its funny..
Did Sir Scott really sat in his editing room and went “i nailed it. Great movie”.
Its really like the Lucas effect.
That is just one of many silly and cliche parts of the movie besides alot of the dialogue. I think we could pick this film apart but what a waste of time. Anyway, I don’t have much faith in the sequel if and when it will be made. I hope Fox reads this forum and discusses the fan backlash. I knew the moment they announced this wasn’t going to be a direct prequel it was most likely going to be a real stinker. My hunch turned out to be right.
Xeno
Fox do not read this forum. Even if they would, they dont care about a bunch of nerds bitching about the movie.
In some featurette, Scott said “What i wanna do is scare the living shit out of you”
At no point was i ever scared during this movie. Nor was I emotionally moved or did i care about anything. I can tell tell you that I thought that the “thing” prequel was made better then this. And thats saying a lot…
Its really a shame but time to move on. No bluray cut will save this turd. More obnoxious acting and dialog. Yeah. I dont think so…
Yes, I know Fox does not read these forums but they do police them for leaked content. I think the box office numbers speak for themselves and they were lucky to break even. Basically, a well crafted viral and online marketing campaign got people super hyped and into the theater. The viral campaign was better than the film itself. I just can’t believe Ridley Scott blew it!
Yeah man.
Totally agree. the viral was great. the trailers not. They gave away everything. I mean how could they put in the final, crash into the trailer? Does anyone in this industry do still give a shit?
The problem is, no editing can save this turd. They’d have to re-do the entire thing. Its too bad non of the nerd movie sites have the balls to ask Ridley the tough questions. Instead, just throw some nice images at them and they drool. The dude from firstshowing called it amazing and my jaw was on the floor the entire time.
oh well man, time to move on. It is what it is. Not going to buy the BR. Not going to support any of it.
You are not needed to support any of it. Others do that:
Source: IMDB – Prometheus

Thank you for the data, Attila.
We all supported the film.
That’s why we’re upset.
Attila
Please dont be a Troll and a smart ass at the same time. Obviously I was speaking for myself.
Reality nailed it, some are upset (like myself) cause im a long time fan and wanted it to be good. No matter how much you will look at it, these numbers dont mean anything.
Transformers movies made over a billion dollars but does that mean they are good? no. They are not what i call good movies.
Also half of that gross goes to the theaters and distributors. The movie did ok because of its hype. It has zero long lasting power, look at the numbers now.
Decent world wide gross doesn’t change the fact that Prometheus is, in my opinion, the biggest turd since the phantom menace. Sorry.
You are welcome.
I am a huge alien fan have been as long as i remember love the whole franchise and even tolerate the bad additions so i gotta say I kinda agree with some aspects of what you guys say. Some bits seemes pointless, but i enjoyed the film i do see where you are coming from i dont think personally this film is a worthy addition to the alien franchise but i do see it as an ideal starting point to whet my appetite for more to come so i m hoping scott doesnt get put off by his fumbles in this one.
Obviously, you can tell the viral and online marketing campaign got people in the theater. However, the film was still terrible and a total waste of money. The funniest shit I heard as I was getting up from my chair after the credits started to roll was this lady who said, “how does this tie into AVP?” I almost turned around and said to her, “don’t worry you will see the predator in the next one.” LMFAO…so funny
Reality, Buzzfunk, Xeno Fan
Thx for stressing that your words reveal your opinion. I just wanted to highlight that there are a lot of people who like the experience Prometheus. Not everybody is a hater after meeting it, I believe.
I looked at the numbers yesterday. And?
Prometheus has crossed $100 million, the first film in the Alien saga reaching this number. Globally the film has grossed over $200 million, again making it the highest grossing film in the series at the international level.
Simple facts, all right, but facts.
I can accept that you don’t like the movie, but I think you can’t tolerate that there are others who do like it.
Dude
WHAT are you saying?
That your opinion is more valid then ours because your backing it up with the fact that the movie made some money?
Are you saying that because it made some money, it MUST be a good movie? Didi you see my Transformers comment?
I tell you a fact, many people i know did not like the movie. And I know a lot of people.
So please, your *facts* dont make it a good movie. U enjoyed it, more power to you. To me, its a turd and always will be.
The end
WHO CLAIMED THAT MY OPINION IS MORE VALID? YOU ARE STATING CONTINUOUSLY THAT THE FILM IS SHIT AND YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO TOLERATE IF SOMEBODY DARES TO SAY THAT HE LIKED IT.
IF YOU HATE IT, OKAY, BUT NOBODY WANTS TO READ IT 100 TIMES IN 50 LINES. GO AND VISIT A BLACK HOLE WITH YOUR NEGATION.
JESUS, HOW F…ING TIRING YOU ARE!
Atilla instead of trying to talk like your intelligent. How about you discuss why you liked it? Stating box office numbers doesn’t show you know anything about the film.
Not Atilla, Attila. It’s my real name. But it’s true that it has other versions as well. For example, Attilla. But not important.
Usually people think that it’s a female name… It isn’t.
Nexo Fan, Neno Fax, Nexo Fax… good versions too.
I am intelligent… and modest too.
I like everything in it. Don’t kill me.
But I have just seen fresh concept work images and I think that more of them should have been used.
Everything can be improved… Let’s make a Prometheus remake next year. Brilliant idea.
Yelling in all caps wont make you look smarter. And who the fuck cares if that name of yours is your real name?
Go back and read what you posted, moron. Throwing around box office numbers to prove that i seem to be *alone* with the fact that this movie is a pos.
Listen kiddo, if your brain is happy with it, so be it. Buy the bluray for another 20 mins of extra pathetic acting and mindless dialog. Its your power. People like you who support mediocre stuff, are just what the studios need.
So they can produce more mediocre crap….so yeah man, your right!
You are wrong. So wrong!
And why aren’t you interested in my name? It’s disappointing. You want to make me sad, don’t you?
I like your name. Can I call you Funkybuzzer?
I’m not a moron. And you know that.
I’m not a kid. A new piece of info.
Kids and morons can make you so nervous?
Ah, you are boring.
hey Attila, I don’t give a shit if you do like it….your not an Alien fan.
Hey-ho, Xeno Fan, so we found the balance because I can’t give a shit what you think about my taste… plus you AREN’T the person who tells me who I am.
Mkay..what balance or taste? Exactly.
For me, I was absolutely blown away by the Prometheus trailer. With Ridley himself at the helm of bringing back the Alien franchise I thought it was in safe hands. Like a lot of people on this forum I was disappointed by the end result. It was the first time I’d ever seen a film where I felt things were off kilter, and instead of being immersed in the stunning visuals, I was there, along with the rest of the audience, scratching my head at the daft writing.
In response to the film, I made this animation: Ridley wasn’t quite prepared for the backlash against Prometheus. Fortunately he has a sympathetic ear when it comes to prequels…
Enjoy!

Mobokeh,
Brilliant work with the animated short.
Atilla,
Thank you for your English.
Xeno Fan,
I love your hate.
RobThom (Troll Version),
That was hilarious!
RobThom (Real Version),
I hate your love.
Buzzfunk,
Keep bringin’ the funk. And by “funk” I mean… calling out what a sagging donkey testicle of a film Prometheus was!
Screebson,
Come back.
Prometheusnews.net,
Thank you for maintaining this website.
Again Atilla! My name is Attila, in reality too.
I learnt English as a second language, and I was taught Br English, not American English. If it’s not good, sorry for that…
OK, I know why you write Atilla. Because of the pronunciation.
Yes, it is the spoken version, but the written form is Attila.
I love you, Attila.
Oh! Thx. Really? It is good to be loved by reality.
Oh, Reality, are you a woman? Can dreams come true? Your words are so calm. I have a strange feeling that you are… Oh, no… I can’t write…
Thanks for all your kind comments. We’re working on part 2 – watch this space!
yes good job
Aww! Thanks Reality! It’s nice to feel wanted! Cheers!
Let’s all sit by the camp fire……and roast Atilla…opps I mean Attila. ha
Okay I have looked at all of concept art and there are lots of images and ideas that were not realized. Does it change my viewpoint, absolutely not. I am an Alien/Aliens purist and I cannot get myself to accept or like this film as a semi-prequel. I went into it with an open mind but my expectations were way to high and I think you know how that story goes. I am just glad other fans out there felt the same about it,
Hi, Nano Fax
OK, but you will be the xeno-ketchup.
Seriously: on other website I found totally new images. A lot. You can download them in rar. I think they are more Alien-like. And I think that they are for a darker version, maybe for a different version. And I see why you are disappointed, it is quite understandable. I mean it is more apparent knowing that you expected a full Alien movie.
Yes, I wanted a true prequel. I am not huge on prequels but this is one film that I have been waiting for years to see realized like every fan. I wanted to see Ridley Scott begin to tell the story of the Jockey/Engineers and Xenomorphs origins and evolution. We did see some of it in this film. I didn’t care if Ripley would be in it, but I wanted to see new characters that were rich in depth and intelligent. I wanted to learn the backstory of the Weyland Yutani Company and terraforming process and how they possibly came in contact with these species before the events of Alien. I wanted to know what that Jockey ship was doing down on LV-426. I wanted to see a film with intense suspense and horror just like Alien/Aliens. When this was still a true prequel, Ridley Scott said, “its going to be the dark side of the moon.”
The film was anything but a huge cluster fuck.
Watch this Hardcore Review by comicbookgirl19. She nailed a lot of my disappointment with this film. Beware she curses more than I do but its a good critical review!

Hi, Xeno
I haven’t watched them yet but I will.
I had the same experience like you. And the same expectations too.
When I first saw Alien I was 16. (It wasn’t in 79 naturally.) It was midnight and I was alone at home. I saw it on TV in German language. (I’m not German.) At that time I didn’t understand German at all but after watching it I was so scared that I wasn’t brave enough to leave my room. Since then I’ve been waiting for the movie which reveals the things you mentioned. Everything you wrote about.
I was happy when I read that Scott would continue his work.
Some months ago it became clear to me that Prometheus is not like Alien. It was a strange feeling, a mixed feeling. You are looking forward to it, but at the same time it is obvious that it will be different. It’s a weird situation. You are glad and disappointed at the same time. So I decided that I wouldn’t expect ‘anything’.
I like Prometheus but I know it is not a true Alien prequel we wanted. I (have to) like it because at least they started working on showing this world. Strange, I know. When Prometheus is attacked, I feel that Alien is attacked as well. (I know that it isn’t but I just have this odd feeling.) I hope you see now why I posted my earlier comments.
The first half of Alien is so fantastic and unique, it can’t be repeated, I love so much. I mean the atmosphere, the music, etc. Prometheus differs – obviously. (It should be mentioned that it was communicated by them that they don’t want a new Alien movie. Good idea or not, at the moment I don’t know.)
Who knows what they are planning now? Maybe a fight between Yutani and Weyland in the second movie. Or there will be two storylines, an Alien and a Prometheus. (It was mentioned earlier as a possibility if I remember correctly.)
I hope they will make the film which is what you (and I) want. Or more films. I hope this is only the beginning and that’s why I can’t attack Prometheus.
But I understand your opinion and disappointment.
I have just discovered that Lindelof was one of the producers of the movie.
That can explain much.
I never had the opportunity to see Alien in the theater but did Aliens, Alien 3, and 4. I am an Alien/Aliens purist and I also like the workprint or assembly cut of Alien 3, not the theatrical cut. The theatrical cut is terrible. If you have not seen it, you should purchase the Alien Anthology on Bluray. Its the best box set that has ever been released in terms of quality and content. I also have read all of the novels and a good majority of the Aliens comic books. I feel passionate about this franchise, and I had high expectations of Ridley Scott to tell the prequel story. This is what every fan has been waiting 30 years for. So, before production began and they announced in January 2011 that it was not a true prequel, I was crushed. I had been following these fan websites to watch the content and see exactly how much it differed. The trailers presented the film as a prequel in my eyes, so I was fairly excited to see what it was about. I saw Prometheus in Imax 3D and visually it was the best presentation but the story, character development and acting was deplorable. The only character that had any depth was David the android. I just was extremely disappointed and feel obligated to voice my opinion on these Prometheus fan websites. The people that operate this website have been deleting my posts because they are cowards and don’t respect freedom of speech. I expect a sequel to this film to be nothing but the same shtick unless better writers are hired to steer it in the right direction. Don’t even get me started on Damon Lindelof, he is a joke of a screenwriter. I have not seen one person in these forums who can justify and backup the quality of this film.
I own these films and I agree with you. The long version of Aliens gives the total picture, I can’t watch the short theatrical cut. The long version of Alien 3 is very good, it’s a different movie with different scenes. But I’m not a big fan of Alien 3 because I think it was not a good idea to kill Ripley in it.
Do not lose your enthusiasm.
Yes, I love the director’s cut of these first 3 films. Alien 3 is very problematic for many fans as the opening sequence of the egg on board the Sulaco. Over the years, I have grown to appreciate Ripley committing suicide to keep the company from obtaining a xenomorph. Its a very dark film and I really like the religious motifs and extra scenes in the workprint/assembly cut. This is the film David Fincher wanted and the studio butchered it to hell. Alien Resurrection could have been a great film if they would not have hired a French director. The Ripley clone was just not the same character as in the first 3 films. I suppose messing with DNA changes things but it just ruined it for me. In a way, I wish James Cameron would have directed Alien 3 and tied the story into the Space Jockey and going back to LV-426 which would lead to the Jockey homeworld. Unfortunately, I can dream of a film that will never be made but to me its a good dream as a fan.
wtf…where is the freedom of speech online.
ok the girl goes to alien planet (engineer) she is sucest or fail they kill her or she just cant find can any one answer and why engineer want to kill peaopl
Reality, please tell him that you love his English…….zzzzzzzzz…..zzzz
All right, everything is accepted but please respect some people beliefs and leave Our Lord Jesus Christ out of being an engineer or an alien
